Question?

I have a question for you all; perhaps it will make this a tad more intereactive.

Based on your experience and in your opinion, RE the offensive scheme, is it better to start with a running attack that passes or is it better to start with a passing attack that runs.

Post up a comment.

At the Highschool level I think you are way further ahead deveoloping a running attack that passes than a passing attack that runs. Of course this miht depend on the type of athlete you most often are able to encourage to come out etc. We definately get more FB type kids than WR type kids. I think you can be more consistent with a running offense and then throw a little more on the rare occasion that you get a good throwing QB and some receivers in the same year. If you are a good running team then play action passes ( say 10 passes a game) are often open as teams have to commit to stopping the run. It's also a philosophical issue. I really like to get positive yardage on every (or most every play) I guess that's why I was attracted to Freeb's EQ ideas. Drive for 5 on every play. Keep the ball away from the other team. As Freeb would say "If they don't have the ball..they can't score" If you are a passing coach you must be able to stand throwing the ball 3 or 4 times to get that completion and move the sticks. I don't really fit that kind of style. I want tough, blue collar teams that can run (and pass) and dominate on the LOS etc. Long answer... but I think you have to have an offense that fits your personality.

Very good advice - youhave to coach what you know . . . and where your heart is.

Thanks, Martin, for you comment.

Come on! We are waiting for the rest of you guys to join in. Post up your comments.

I agree with Martin. I believe in High school the running attack that passes will be consistent week in and week out. Fortunately for the next 2 years we have a great young QB with some talented running backs in our program. So we will be able to have a balanced mix of run and pass. But if injuries occur it is always nice to fall back to the run.

I agree, coaching here in the midwest the run can always be consistant but with the rain, cold and wind it is tough to rely on a passing offense to remain highly effective.

The play action pass off the best run plays can be devastating.
