WHAT???

I got this email in response to the post on the head shaving article I posted:

Since the tragedy at Columbine, high school administrators have been forced to adopt a “zero tolerance” policy towards harassment. This is the law. Promoting head shaving among a football team, regardless of the cause, can be considered a form of harassment. I say this because it’s likely that an athlete who decides not to shave their head will be treated differently in some manner – and all it takes is one angry parent to bring this matter to court. As such, administrators and coaches cannot endorse head shaving as they could risk losing their jobs and costing the school financial hardship with legal expenses because, again, zero tolerance is the law.

Further, consider that after a head shaving occurs, all the players for safety reasons must have their helmets refitted. If a football player suffers a serious head injury after having their head shaved, especially if there is no documentation that a refitting was performed, this could be the deciding factor in a lawsuit. There are many great ways to show support of a cause but, from a legal standpoint, supporting a cause with head shaving is not worth the risks.

Before I post up my response . . . what do YOU have to say?

Oh My word....where to begin? It reminds me of a former adminis"traitor" who wouldn't allow us to do some traditional pep rally games because someone might be allergic to whipping cream or balloons etc. etc. It you never do anything you'll never have to worry about the chance of being sued right? He also was against us doing the 'ol gag where you blind fold some senior players and ask them if they can ID there girlfriends kiss on the cheek but then of course you bring out there Mom's etc. and everyone has a good laugh. He didn't allow that 'ol one because someone might be embarrassed. What? Wow Freeb but as i too often say in education..."no good deed goes unpunished"....This head shaving piece was to honour and stand with the fellow with cancer...wow We did a similar thing a few years ago called "balding for dollars" where kids raised money to see their coaches and teachers get shaved. It was also a cancer research fundraiser. The helmet fitting issue does kind of make sense but aren't most helmets air helmets now? A little more air in the bladder should tighten up the hat right?

All I can say is this is rediculous. Some players are trying to honor their fellow teammate. It was their choice to participate. Not to mention these are college athletes. I find it hard to believe that the coach would "make" his players participate in this honor. Whoever sent you this e-mail is taking this the wrong way
